Cartina Isola d'Elba Capoliveri

Capoliveri is a charming hillside medieval town situated at 167m above sea level. From the streets of Capoliveri it is possible to see the Maremma Coast, Corsica, Montecristo island and the old towns of Portoazzuro and Rio Marina.

It is a place rich in charm and history, still much the same as it was in medieval times, with narrow streets and arches(known as chiassi) which hide craft shops and friendly locals.

The origins and name of this town go back to Roman times. It was named CAPUT LIBERUM after the rich vines and excellent wine, which loosely translated means “ Free Hill” sacred to Bacchus.

The town was fortified during the medieval period by the inhabitants of Pisa to protect it from the ongoing raids by the bloody Saracen pirates. The Romanic ruins of the church of San Michele is a witness of those times.

Festivals and fairs:

Panorama Capoliveri In September there is the grape festival, where different factions of Capoliveri (il fosso, la torre, la Fortezza and il Baluardo)confront each other in a traditional celebration of the grape harvest.

On the 14th of July there is the Lovers’ festival in remembrance of the antique legend of the young Lorenzo and Maria..

In May the quarry workers‘ festival takes place, celebrating the antique mineral origins of the island.

Ginestre Those who come to Capoliveri can discover a new beach or cove every day as there are so many to choose from. In the evening it is possible to stroll through the lively streets of the historic town or sit in the bars of the squares where there is often entertainment, concerts and shows with international artists.

Vino There are many restaurants serving excellent Tuscan and local dishes and plenty of nightlife.

The coastline is of a special beauty, characterised by coves and bays enveloped in the perfume of the particular Mediterranean vegetation; for example the coves of Morconi, Pareti and L’innamorata, once small fishing coves and now well known holiday destinations.
